Citizens sue after detentions, immigration raids

With the increase in workplace immigration raids by ICE, more and more citizens are being accidentally rounded up—and they're starting to sue, reports USA Today, in a piece on the number of suits brought against the federal government by citizens who were caught in immigration raids.

Two snapshots—

Dhopade says he was a victim of racial profiling by ICE. An ICE agent questioned him about his immigration status and his ability to speak English "because of my skin color," he says. "None of the white folks in the office … that I know of were asked for proof of citizenship. To be asked for proof of citizenship, in this country, it's an insult. This is the United States of America. This country does not require that."

In other immigration raids, citizens and legal, permanent residents have been taken to jail. Jesus Garcia, a former Texas poultry worker, was handcuffed and spent more than 30 hours in ICE custody this year, part of that time in jail. Two co-workers, both citizens, also were arrested. No charges were filed against them.

Things have changed, Damiela. Since there are 20 illegal aliens in this country, who has broken all our immigration laws, it has become necessary to ask all Hispanics for the proof of citizenship. A nation who does not enforce it's laws is not a nation at all. The raids, arrest and deportation must continue until illegal aliens respects our laws and enter this country legally. If you have proof of citizenship, you should have no problem proving it. 9-11 happened because we did not ask for proof of citizenship and we do not want people in this country illegally. Illegal immigration has made it necessary to ask for proof of citizenship.

These citizens should be willing to pay this small price for the privilege of living in this country. I know I would be willing to carry proof of citizenship if I were in their position. What's the big deal? Carry your proof like you would your drivers license. Isn't English a requirement to become a citizen? If so, isn't an inability to speak English something different than racial profiling? Desperate times require desperate measures. Surely every citizen should be able to realize that. Dhopade is just out to try to make a quick buck. He has no regard for our national sovereignty. To be asked for proof of citizenship is not an insult. Everyone should be proud to show that they are citizens of the USA.
