The Bilingual Debate: English Immersion
The NYTImes' Campaign Stops blog had an interesting blog post on the bilingual education debate. In the post, two education experts take a look at Obama's stance on the issue.

Expert #1: "While he agrees that immigrants should learn English, Mr. Obama recently trivialized the issue when he said that people should stop worrying about “English-only” legislation. Instead, he said, “you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.”

If Mr. Obama truly wishes to close achievement gaps, he should carefully consider education models that work rather than scorn or trivialize them."

Expert #2: "Despite his own family history — or perhaps inspired by it — Barack Obama is pitching a middle ground when it comes to bilingual education. He rejects the English-only thrust of nativist conservatives, while distancing himself from advocates of cultural preservation. Mr. Obama favors “transitional bilingual education,” meaning that he believes teachers should transition children to English as quickly as possible, building-up from students’ knowledge of their native language. That is, youngsters should become literate in two languages, not one."

While considerable progress has been made in securing America’s borders and reducing the number of immigrants entering this country illegally, meaningful immigration reform can only be achieved through a comprehensive solutions that addresses all aspects of this issue.

To finish the job on immigration reform, Congress and the president need to work together on legislation that further increases security along our borders, penalizes employers who hire undocumented workers, and creates a fair and realistic plan for integrating undocumented workers into a legal system of employment.

The Pew Hispanic Center has released a report which shows that illegal immigration has slowed in the past three years, reports the SFChronicle.

From the article—

There were approximately 11.9 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States as of March, down from 12.4 million in March 2007, says the report by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The number of people coming into the country illegally decreased from 800,000 a year from 2000 through 2004 to about 500,000 a year from 2005 through 2008. The number of legal permanent immigrant residents - those granted lawful permission to live in the United States but who are not citizens - who came into the country in 2007 was about 650,000.

That was the first time in a decade that new legal immigrant residents outnumbered new illegal immigrants, the study said. It cautioned that the changes may not be statistically significant because of the possibility of sampling errors.
