Redefining "Illegal" Immigrants

While immigration reform is back on the table and subject to continued debate, let’s remember to put things into perspective...

Why do Indians lead all other immigrant groups in occupying U.S. executive positions? What contributes to their overall success? In the excerpt below, Hindustantimes  sheds light upon the contributing factors to immigrants’ success stories and ways to overcome diversity odds. This is a must read! Enjoy-

Indians are head-and-shoulders above other immigrants in US: Forbes

"Pepsico chief executive Indra Nooyi inevitably tops the list of what Forbes calls "Eight Indian-Flavoured CEOs" who lead US corporations with revenues of at least $2 billion as the premier business magazine chronicles the rise of Indians in corporate ranks in America.

"The chief executive of PepsiCo would be prominent no matter what. The fact that the current one - Indra Nooyi - is an Indian immigrant (and female, in case you’ve been living under a rock) makes her all the more noteworthy," it says. "It’s not a not a surprise that we’re seeing Indians rise in corporate ranks," Forbes quotes Richard Herman, co-author of a book on migrants to the US, Immigrant, Inc, as saying in an article published Monday.

"Of all the immigrant groups coming in today, Indians are head-and-shoulders above others, and this is partly because of their English language skills and also the advanced education that many of them are bringing to the US."

"Despite these personal success stories the number of immigrants who are leading corporate America, Indian or otherwise, is still a tiny fraction," according to Forbes. But, says Herman, "look at where the data was ten years ago and maybe it was zero or one [Indian then]."

Future CEO candidates might want to look for a tough assignment in order to break through, he says. "Americans are having a tough time dealing with global diversity, Herman adds, " but just look at who was running the Tarp financial-rescue fund - Neel Kashkari"- an Indian-American who is now joining bond giant Pimco as a managing director."
Of the featured eight, Nooyi, 53, says Herman, is part of a growing trend where US companies are being created, or led, by foreign-born individuals who bring in something special..."

Natives' Immigration Perspective

Let's make sure we put things into perspective... Here's one of my favorites-

Rep. Gutierrez introduced an immigration reform bill called CIR ASAP this Tuesday that addressed many issues relevant to the immigrant community. One of those issues was human trafficking.

Human trafficking is more of a reality to the immigrant community than anyone could ever imagine. Of the 27 million trafficking victims worldwide, the office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (under)estimates that nearly 18,000 foreign nationals are brought into the U.S. for the purpose of labor and sex slavery. I urge you to watch this video which outlines the stark connection between immigration and human trafficking...

MMAP: Dream Big by Starting Small

On September 28, 2009 nearly 100 people attended the Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together (MATT) and ACCION-Texas launch of the MATT Micro-lending Assistance Program (MMAP), an initiative designed to help individuals establish their new small enterprise.

“The beauty of this program is that we not only provide them with financial assistance but with technical support as well to help ensure their success” said Janie Barrera, President & CEO, ACCION Texas-Louisiana.

The MMAP program depends on the generosity and financial support from businesses and donors to succeed, and MATT has committed to securing financial supporters to ensure the continuation and success of the program. MATT will identify and secure businesses to support ACCION-Texas.

However, MATT’s contribution comes with a twist. “We are going after Mexican-owned companies so that they can give back to the community that has helped them succeed,” confirms Garcia-Granados. “We need to cultivate a sense of philanthropy among Latinos and this is one small way to do it.”

“There are many talented people in our communities, especially among Latinos, who just need a little counseling and financial support to make the American dream come true. I am glad to have had this opportunity to partner with MATT and ACCION-Texas. I cannot think of a better cause and a more needed program.”

It is MATT’s goal to work with its national network of supporters to identify communities where MMAP is most likely to succeed. “At this point, we want to get the information out there to create interest among potential donors but we are also going to aggressively promote this program and get supporters. There is a lot of need out there and we are committed to make this program work for those who will most benefit,” concluded Garcia-Granados.

The Faces of Our Future

"No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts off from its youth severs its lifeline.
-- Kofi Annan

On Citizenship Day in San Antonio, MATT was in the center of the action as over twenty youths swore allegiance to the Unites States and were presented with their citizenship certificates by San Antonio’s very own Citizenship and Immigration Services officials. At the Institute of Texan Cultures, youths from the United Arab Emirates, India, Russia, the Philippines, Mexico, Syria, and China were joined by San Antonio’s District Director of the USCIS, Mario Ortiz, and Judge John Primomo who also celebrated this momentous occasion.

These are the faces of our future! Faces that glow with the enthusiasm we share as citizens of the United States of America. Faces that remind us of the pride we take being part a nation of diverse and free individuals...

Never has cultural competence been so relevant! In light of current events and the North American summit this week in Guadalajara, the need for common ground becomes obvious. Now more than ever, North Americans as a whole need to understand each other- linguistically and socially.

So, in the spirit of North American multicultualism, I present the chart below created by Eva Kras in her publication,Management in Two Cultures - Bridging the gap between US and Mexico. While some readers may find the information agreeable or disagreeable, it at least attempts to bridge the gap of understanding between people who are united geographically but divided culturally.  Enjoy-

Cultural Comparisons

Aspect

Mexico

Canada/USA

Family

Family is the first priority.
Children are celebrated and sheltered.
Wife fulfills domestic role.
Mobility is limited.
Family is usually second to work.
Children often minimally parented; are independent.
Wife often fulfills dual roles.
Mobility quite common.

Religion

Long Roman Catholic tradition.
Fatalistic outlook. "As God wills."
Mixed religions.
"Master of own life" outlook.

Education

Memorization.
Emphasis on theoretical.
Rigid, broad curriculum.
Analytical approach.
Emphasis on the practical.
Narrow, in-depth specialization.

Nationalism

Very nationalistic.
Proud of long history and traditions.
Reluctant to settle outside Mexico.
(U.S.)Very patriotic.
Proud of "American way of life."
Assumes everyone shares his/her materialistic values.
(Canadian) Less than U.S.. Often has more " World" view.

Personal Sensitivity

Difficulty separating work and personal relationships.
Sensitive to differences of opinion.
Fears loss of face, especially publicly.
Shuns confrontation.
Separates work from emotions/personal relationships.
Sensitivity seen as weakness.
Tough business front.
Has difficulty with subtlety.

Etiquette

"Old world" formality.
Etiquette and manners seen as measure of breeding.
Formality often sacrificed for efficiency.
"Let's get to the point" approach.

Personal Appearance

Dress and grooming are status symbols. Appearance is secondary to performance.

Status

Title and position more important than money in eyes of society. Money is main status measure and is reward for achievement.

Aesthetics

Aesthetic side of life is important even at work. No time for "useless frills".

Ethics

Truth is tempered by need for diplomacy.
Truth is a relative concept.
Direct Yes/No answers given and expected.
Truth seen as absolute value.
