Immigration
May 1st Boycott and Protests
The Hispanic and immigrant communities y several cities around the United States will return to the streets today to express their support for a fair immigration reform that legalizes the undocumented and stops the raids against immigrants in their places of employment.
On May 1, 2006, hundreds of thousands of Hispanic citizens and immigrants sought to show the country what it would be like to live a day without them. Many took a day off from work and some businesses were forced to close. The boycott followed weeks of massive protests nationwide.
Organizers recognized that protests this year will be smaller than last year. However, many cities around the country are expected to show support.
The call to action for this year is the same. Organizers are asking immigrants and supporters to refrain from going to work or school, purchasing goods or doing business on May 1st. They are also asking citizens and immigrants to participate in community marches and events that will demonstrate public support. (MATT Staff)
