TMC offering maternity packages to Mexican women, raising questions on birthright
A Tucson hospital's health-care package promises affluent Mexican women the chance to have their babies in posh surroundings with access to the latest medical equipment.
But the marketing materials leave out a key draw in the arrangement: U.S. citizenship for the newborn.
Tucson Medical Center's "birth package" gives an official nod to a generations-old practice of wealthy Mexican women coming to U.S. hospitals to give birth. Mexican families do the same thing at all local hospitals, but TMC is the only one actively recruiting their business.
The practice is legal, but offensive to some advocates of tougher U.S. immigration standards.
"What it really amounts to," said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, "is buying U.S. citizenship."
"This is different from any other kind of medical treatment," said Krikorian, whose Washington, D.C.-based think tank studies the impact of immigration on the United States. "If you come for cancer treatment … there's no consequence for the United States. You pay your money, you go home."
The Mexican consul general in Tucson said parents naturally want to give their children every advantage and securing U.S. citizenship is something a small percentage of Mexican families can afford.
"This is not a new phenomena," said Juan Manuel Calderón Jaimes, who says he's seen the practice for almost 30 years. "Many families of means in Sonora send their wives here to give birth because they have the resources to pay for the services."
Expectant mothers can either schedule a Caesarean section or arrive a few weeks before their due dates to give birth at TMC. It is one of 13 packages aimed at Mexican families, some of which include a stay at a local resort and shopping excursion...

It's bad enough that an illegal alien can spit in our face by breaking and entering into our country......and then if they have a kid on our soil....they get REWARDED for breaking our laws by their kid being an anchor baby...

Solution: End birthright citizenship.
The bright side of this practice, is that, like the wealthy Cubans who fled Castro, these kids will be coming from an upper class background and likely not be a drain on the country. But I only wonder if this story isn't "making a movie script" with its tales of private jets and massages. It seems as if even those poor Mexicans can scrape up a few grand to pay the people-smugglers for their ticket into the U.S. This story doesn't tell the whole truth, it's a bit fishy.

How nice that TMC gets to decide who has United States citizenship. You will notice that I did not write American citizenship. Some of us are Americans and then there are people with U.S. citizenship.

Maybe it is time to take away the "anchor babies" and instant citizenship for kids born to non US citizens in this country. If the parents have lived here and are trying legally to become citizens, no problem. But how many are taking our tax dollars for free services because they had a kid in the USA? I remember reading years ago where a Mexican woman swam in a lake to get across the border to make sure she had the kid in the USA. She nearly drowned. When asked, it had nothing to do with the hospital care being better. She said, in Spanish, it was all the freebies she could get thanks to her "golden child"!!
This madness needs to stop. Our country is spending billions of our tax money to pay for food stamps, etc to illegals because their kid is a legal citizen. They can care less about citizenship but demand rights????? HUH???? It is all want, want want and no desire to give back for many.
I feel sorry for the individuals and families that want to improve their lives, become legal citizens, want the American dream. It can be so hard to get started and they do what they can to not want aide. But all of us need help now and then. But aiding illegals has to stop. We have this anchor baby law that is killing us. Now TMC is making it worse. Thanks for taking more money out of our pockets when they need financial support later!!!!

I used to work at TMC and was DISGUSTED by the fact that they were marketing and catering to Mexican citizens to have their babies there. One of the MANY reasons I left there... It is deplorable that they charge these women $2300-4600 including resort stay and shopping spree. For an insured person those charges will easily be triple that and your stay includes the not so relaxing sound of Mexican children running through the hallways screaming at the top of their lungs along with other members of their large families blocking room access, etc.
I wondered when this practice would come to light and fire people up. I am going to send a link of this story to the White House and the HHS. I suggest anyone else angry about this do this same. Get it to all those newshounds. With the health care debate going on this article is very timely.
It is about time we stand up and say NO MORE!!!!!

In 1787 when the Constitution was adopted in Philadelphia, this country was quite a bit different than today's USA. There was no social security, no welfare, no blood sucking imigrants coming to this country just to leach off of us. Imigrants came to America to find a better world, work hard and asimelate into this country. We live in a different world today. Although the article is about a TMC marketing program (nothing wrong with that, as it is their right to do business however they want and they are a good hospital), but it is also about encouraging a way to US citizenship that has absolutely no benefit to our future. The Consitution nees some masaging. We need to elect the right people, if it's not too late, to fix the holes in the Consitution. Just a thought- In the US illegally, no citizenship for new born, no benefits, other than a ride back to where they came from. Non-citizens in the US legally-reqire 1 year minimum residency prior to birth for child citizenship. Create a seconday citizenship class that will be like dual citizenship with no benefits, i.e. helathcare, education, welfare, housing.
This will never happen until Obama and his cronies in Congress are out, as this is contrary to the Socialist Docturine (not a mis-spelling).
This includes all immigrants, not just our neighbors to the South.

#64 TC, I worked at TMC many years ago on the maternity ward. And I agree with you 100%
When ever we had a wealthy Mexican woman who came to have her baby, they were treated with royalty which they demanded! The rules didn't apply to them. Their huge families with lots of children would be running wild through the halls, some coughing and with runny noses. And they were rude and obnoxious and the staff was no more than their hand maids.
Since they were from out of town they would "camp out" in the waiting rooms. But because they had $$$$ they were VIP. I had all my children at TMC. And yes they have a top notch staff, but this is nonsense of offering massages and other resort style treatment is something I never experienced at TMC, but we are going to offer it to the wealthy from other countries?
OUR COMMUNITY SHOULD COME FIRST!!!

#26: The 14th Amendment was adopted on July 9, 1868, right after the Civil War and was part of the Reconstruction Amendments (the others being the 13th (abolish slavery) and the 15th (denying voting based on race or previous condition)). #19 was attempting to put the 14th amendment in context. I doubt the people at the time who ratified this never imagined their good intentions would be so flagrantly abused in the future.
The 14th Amendment says, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
It was intended to right the wrongs of slavery, not allow a bunch of freeloaders with no desire to assimilate to take advantage of the American taxpayer. Its time for a Constitutional Convention but no politician has the stones to bring it up lest he be called racist and is led down the path trailblazed by Tom Tancredo.
TMC is catering to the women of the drug cartels, as they are make up a large percentage of the wealthy people they are talking about. Do we now need to pose as Mexicans to get quality care or go to Mexico where we can afford it? Just stupid.
