McCain still doesn't get it. For an otherwise good candidate, he appears to have lost all his faculties on the issue of immigration. Distrust of government is only one element of the failure of S.1639. He seems to forget all those who want enforcement first. He seems to not understand that all aspects of this long-standing problem needn't be solved in one massive bill. Many would prefer a demonstration of good faith regarding enforcement and border security before we go any farther. The distrust of government is well-founded and can only be overcome by heavy investment in border enforcement and security and a change in the rules of engagement so that the Border Patrol can do its job. We have to reduce the volume of border traffic so that there is some remote hope that the BP can detect miscreants who would become a part of the wave of illegals. Internal enforcement, Official English and a reinterpretation of the 14th amendment would be further indications of governmental good faith and would quickly lead to a solution of the overall problem. If a correct thought on immigration reform went through most congresspersons' heads, it would be the quickest trip in North America.
